The novel is actually composed of two short stories:
The Moon Up There
and
Sanosuke and the Nishiki-e.
The first story is dedicated to Kenshin, Kaoru and Yahiko. The protagonist
is Daigoro Okuma, a young student of the famous teacher Katsu, that during
a lunch at the Akabeko loses an important book of his teacher. It is the
novel
From the Earth to the Moon by J. Verne in original language,
a rare book in Japan at the age we talk.
Following Tae's suggestion, the young boy, terrorized by the idea of being
chased by his own teacher because of the loss, decides to ask help to
Kenshin, that accepts to help him, despite the bad impression that the
teacher Katsu has given both to Himura and to Yahiko.
They begin therefore the investigations, startung from the Akabeko. Immediately
come to the light two facts: the book has been stolen and not lost, two
sinister individuals, one wearing western clothes and the other armed
with a sword, had been to the tavern really that day.
Meanwhile strange things happen in the city: the temple of Homejin of
Kandamyojinshita seems to be infested by ghosts!
Kenshin decides to go to talk to Katsu, which had ordered to Daigoro to
find the book within two days without, however, scatter around the voice
of the disappearance, and it discovers that the teacher is not interested
so much in finding the novel but in the recover of the cloth in which
the book was in.
It's not, in fact, a common cloth, but a map for the secret treasure of
the last shogun Tugokawa: Katsu, in fact, is helping the heir Yoshinobu
Tokugawa to reach a position of relief in the government Meiji, while
the Beniaoi want that money to finance a revolt and to reconstitute the
Shogunate.
After Daigoro, Katsu also asks the intervention of Himura too to avoid
the burst of the revolt. Even if not entirely convinced Kenshin accepts
to help the teacher in the search the map...
The second story has as protagonists Sanosuke and its friend Tsunan, ex
companion of the Sekihoutai.
This story is also present as a special episode in the manga (volume 6)
and in the anime (episodes 23 and 24).
After a lunch at the Akabeko, Tae asks Sanosuke to go and buy her a Nishiki-e
(picture) by the famous artist Tsunan Tsukioka.
At the stand Sano also finds another picture that represents the commander
of the Sekihoutai Souzou Sagara. Behind him, two little boys.... the small
Sanosuke and Katsuhiro Tsukioka.
So, we discover that Tsunan and Katsuhiro are actually the same person,
and after ten years Sanosuke finds again his friend of infancy.
After having remembered the old times with the commander Sagara, Tsunan
reveals to Sanosuke that has in mind a plan to take revenge of the government
that has declared the Sekihoutai an army of traitors. Sano decides to
help his friend in his project and one evening they decide to penetrate
in the building of the Meiji government, but they find Kenshin waiting
for them...
